Bat Houses & Accessories

Bats play an extremely important role in ecosystems across all of North America.  According to Bat Conservation International (BCI), a global authority on bats and bat conservation, just one little brown bat can eat 1,000 mosquito sized insects in just one hour.  This not only makes your outdoor activities more enjoyable, it decreases the spread of disease carrying insects (like West Nile Virus carrying mosquitoes) and naturally keeps the ecosystem in balance.  Unfortunately, bat habitats are becoming increasingly scarce due to urban sprawl and human development.

Adding a bat house to your yard is one easy step that you can take to maintain a healthy bat population and attract the winged mammal to your area.  Installing a bat house is easy and can have a dramatic effect on the insect pests in your yard.  Even a single chambered bat house can hold up to 50 bats, which could eat an astounding 50,000 mosquitoes in a single hour!  According to the BCI, bats and birds rarely compete for space or food, so you do not need to worry about the two sharing your habitat.  The Lantern Hill offers a range of bat house sizes.  For the best results we recommend having at least two – one single chamber for the bachelors, and a larger box for the rest of the colony.  Please refer to this Bat House Guide courtesy of Bat Conservation International (they are the experts after all) for information on where to place your bat house and the color that you should use for the best results.
