Songbird Essentials: Family Owned and Made in the USA

Posted by

At Lantern Hill, we feel lucky to carry products from the Songbird Essentials brand. Mel Toellner launched Songbird Essentials in 2008 after thirteen successful years running a backyard birding and nature store in Columbia, Missouri. Six years later, Songbird Essentials is the fastest growing line of wild bird products in North America. Songbird Essentials offers a very impressive range of bird houses, feeders, and baths. If you are looking to attract certain types of birds to you backyard, they offer products specifically designed to meet the needs of cardinals, goldfinches, bluebirds, hummingbirds, purple martins, orioles, screech owls, and even other types of animals like bats and butterflies.

Mel and his wife Bev still run their retail store Songbird Station in Columbia, Missouri. They use the store as a concepts testing ground to try out new ideas and get customer feedback about products. Instead of just creating your typical birding products, Songbird Essentials offers several innovative patented products like the Twirl-A-Squirrel, a mechanical squirrel baffle that twirls squirrels away from feeders and All Weather feeders that will keep seed dry in rain, snow, sleet, and ice.

Here are a few of the things that we love about Songbird Essentials. We love that Songbird Essentials is still a family owned business, operated by Mel and Bev with active participation from their children. Songbird Essentials also puts a lot of emphasis on providing quality “Made in the USA” products. Over 95% of their products are currently made in the United States. We also really appreciate that Songbird Essentials strives to help families enjoy nature together. A great quote from Toellner is, “Nature is God’s stress reliever- take time today to listen to the birds sing.”

Audubon Society Takes On Bird Strikes

Currently, many airports mow large areas of turf. These large open spaces can be very attractive to birds, including birds like geese and sea gulls that are large enough [...]
