Nesting Material

Nesting birds use a wide variety of materials to build sturdy nests for their young in the spring and summer months.  Twigs, grass, pine needles, and leaves are some of the materials that birds will use to build their nests in nature, though they will also use materials like animal fur and yarn.  Spread fur clumps from your pet’s most recent brushing around your backyard during nesting season, or place cut up knitting yarn for the nesting birds to use.  Make sure that your yarn strips are approximately two inches in length so that the bird guests (or their baby birds) do not get tangled up.
